Using Geodetic GPS Receivers to Measure Vegetation Water Content
نویسنده
چکیده
22 A GPS-based method is presented to measure vegetation water content. Commercially available 23 geodetic-quality GPS receivers and antennas are used. The method is tested using GPS 24 measurements collected over three field seasons. The GPS data are compared with in situ data 25 for three plant types: desert grass, wheat and alfalfa. The GPS retrievals or vegetation water 26 content are based on the GPS signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data. Instrumental issues that affect the 27 SNR data are discussed, particularly satellite transmit power variations, footprint variations, and 28 temperature effects. The amplitudes of the SNR data show a nearly linear relationship to the 29 water content in grasses (0-0.5 kg/m) and wheat crops (0-0.9 kg/m). As predicted by theory, 30 this simple linear relationship breaks down in vegetation with heavy water content, such as 31 alfalfa. The field results are consistent with forward model predictions, which effect restricts the 32 use of this simple linear model for vegetation to water content of less than ~1 kg/m. 33 34

GPS interferometric reflectometry: applications to surface soil moisture, snow depth, and vegetation water content in the western United States
GPS interferometric reflectometry is a new environmental sensing technique that can be used to measure near-surface soil moisture, snow depth, and vegetation water content variations. The spatial scale of this technique, ~1000 m, is intermediate to that of other in situ sensors (<1 m) and satellites (>100 km). Soil moisture and snow depth retrievals have accuracies of 0.04 m/m and 0.04 m, respe...
متن کاملAn algorithm for soil moisture estimation using GPS-interferometric reflectometry for bare and vegetated soil
Ground-reflected global positioning system signals measured by a geodetic-quality GPS system can be used to infer temporal changes in near-surface soil moisture for the area surrounding the antenna. This technique, known as GPS-interferometric reflectometry, analyzes changes in the interference pattern of the direct and reflected signals, which are recorded in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data, ...
متن کاملSensing vegetation growth with reflected GPS signals
[1] Estimates of vegetation state are required for hydrometeorological modeling and validation of satellite estimates of land surface conditions. A linkage is described between vegetation growth and ground reflected multipath at GPS stations. Reflections are sensitive to conditions over a ∼1000m area, larger than typical in situ observations but smaller than space‐based products. At two agricul...
متن کاملMeasurements of Precipitable Water Vapor by GPS, Radiosondes, and a Microwave Water Vapor Radiometer
Results from the Westford WAter Vapor Experiment (WWAVE) will be discussed. This experiment was designed to measure the temporal and spatial variability of the total precipitable water vapor (PWV) over an area of roughly 25 km radius around the Haystack Observatory in Westford, MA. The main experiment was conducted from August 15 to August 30, 1995, and a variety of techniques were used to meas...
متن کاملCan we measure snow depth with GPS receivers?
[1] Snow is an important component of the climate system and a critical storage component in the hydrologic cycle. However, in situ observations of snow distribution are sparse, and remotely sensed products are imprecise and only available at a coarse spatial scale. GPS geodesists have long recognized that snow can affect a GPS signal, but it has not been shown that a GPS receiver placed in a s...
